The church in the catacombs : a description of the primitive church of Rome : illustrated by its sepulchral remains . with the tragic histories of Piedmont,Constance, and the Inquisition ? Besides the cemetery of Callistus, those of , Lawrence, Saturninus and Thraso, Marcel-linus and Peter, and several others, have obtainedgreat celebrity. There is also a cemetery belowthe present Basilica of St. Peter, on the Vaticanhill; but it has been so overloaded with the pro-ductions of after ages, that little trace of the earliercenturies is left. Most of those works were depo-sited there when the present church of St. Peterswas erected. In addition to the Christian cemeteries, there isanother that seems to have been appropriated tothe Hebrews; but whether as Jews or as Christianconverts, is doubtful. It was discovered by Bosio,on the Via Portuense: he could find in it no signsof Christianity, and but one inscription, the word SYNAmr Synagogue; together with a lamp (of which a copyis annexed), having upon it a figure of the goldencandlestick brought from Jerusalem by Titus. AS A CHRISTIAN CEMETERY. 75. Munter* has foundtwo other figures of thesame candlestick; andBosiof says that theywere commonly em-ployed by the Jews, andoccasionally by Chris-tians : he quotes theobservation of Jose-phus, that the figure re-presented heaven, theseven lamps standingfor the sun and six planets. Lamps of terracotta are found abundantly in the Catacombs ;they are generally marked with the cross, with thelikenesses of Peter and Paul, or with some otherChristian symbol. There is another of these goldencandlesticks figured in Buonarotti, with the addi-tion of this mark, which probably repre- sents a horn for pouring in oil. Lastly, J Jin a MS. collection lent to the authorby a young Italian who had compiled it from theJesuits College in Rome, there is an inscription, ofwhich the annexed is a fac-simile.
