Marine mite feeding. A marine mite (top), family Halacaridae, feeding on the beach-dwelling crustacean Derocheilocaris typica, of the sub- class Mystacocarida. Small crustaceans are the principal prey of water mites. Members of Mystacocarida are the most primitive of all crustaceans, and live in coastal groundwater and in spaces between large grains of sand on the beach. They are segmented with appendages which they use to push their way between grains of sand. They possess four eyes. Magnification: x330 at 5x7cm size. x540 at 4x5ins
