In this field with Winder were such menas William Pinkney, whom Chief Justice Marshall styled the greatest ofAmerican lawyers ; Roger B. Taney, afterward chief justice; Robert Good-loe Harper and William Wirt, intellectual giants, whose encounters havefurnished rich material for the essayists and biographers of the present £oAn ^. ^lonftid HISTORY OF BALTIMORE 813 Mr. Morris pursued his studies for some time with Mr. Winder, and soonproved himself in no small degree worthy of his distinguished , he opened an office with Lloyd N. Rogers, then proprietor of DruidHill, but did not long continue the practice of law. About this time thepolitical difficulties with Great Britain, which culminated in the last warwith England, were becoming more and more pronounced; trouble wasimminent, and Mr. Morris laid aside his promising law practice to enterinto active military service. During the War of 1812, he served on Gen-eral Winders staff with the rank of major, and participated in the battleof Bladensburg and the defense of the city of Baltimore. In 1817 he married Miss Hollingsworth, a lady of pronounced beautyand many accomplishments, and from that time on, he devoted himselfprincipally to operations in real estate.
