A view of Rotterdam in 1955 – this was photographed looking south from the tramstop on Weena as a cyclist rode by. In the distance is the Old Luxor theatre on Kruiskade – showing was ‘Vrouwen op Avontuur’ with Georges Marchal and Maria Mauban. Next to it is the Hotel Centraal. On the left is Stadhuis Rotterdam and its distinctive clock tower. The modern building is Holbeinhuis. The view has now gone with modern high-rise buildings built along Weena – a vintage 1950s photograph.

Rotterdam is a major port city in the province of South Holland. After being almost completely reconstructed following World War II, the city is now known for its modern architecture, as well as its university, riverside setting, cultural activity and maritime heritage. This image is from a visitor’s old amateur black and white negative. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
