The Mission was established in May, 1853, by anumber of young men connected with the M. E. Church,and a small frame house in Bedford street was rented bythem for the use of schools attached to the the degraded character of many of theinhabitants in this immediate section, the Mission flour-ished beyond the most sanguine expectations of itsfounders, and now a new building is necessary to accom-modate the numbers flocking to the Mission. THE PAST AND THE PRESENT. 879 feet and a depth of 53 feet, and -will be three stories first floor will be devoted to the use of the Mission-aries and officers; the second story for public preaching andSabbath-school for white children; the third story forthe uses of a day-school. At present, one hundred andthirty children attend the day-school, and one hundredand fifty white children the Sabbath-school, and aboutsixty colored in another building. Much good has al-ready been efiected by the Mission, and with a new andenlarged building, and new friends, much more will nodoubt be accomplished. The collection taken up on theground amounted to ^528. The house thus auspiciously commenced was com-pleted the following winter, and on the fourteenth dayof February, A.
