It will be noticed that the air openings are narrow and * See Americak Engineer, page 225, See Amertcan Engineer, page 392, See American Engineer, page 305, Section at C-D ARRANGEMENT OF ARCH TUBES AND BRICK IN THE FIREBOX large dump grates are provided at the back of the fire illustration shows the arrangement of the brick archsupported on four 3 in. air tubes. This arch is carried wellback and up to reduce the direct pull on the fire as much aspossible. In the front end a large area isprovided and the diaphragm plate is backedup with a netting for breaking up the sparksas they emerge from the tubes. A low noz-zle is used with a bell mouthed interior ex-tension on the stack. The grates and frontend arrangement are very similar to thoseused on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincyillustrated in the article referred to. As mentioned above, the boiler is of theradial stay design and it has 400 flexible staybolts distributed on the sides, back andthroat sheet. The fire door opening is formedby flanging both sheets outward and rivetingthem together, a form of construction whichhas been received with much favor on anumber of roads.
