Grey sky view apartments overlooking green grass Berlin Wall border strip, looking east, Swinemunder Strasse at Bernauer Strasse
A nearby information panel reads: 'After the wall was built, the East German police locked up the doors exiting onto Bernauer Strasse. The windows were gradually bricked up after a number of residents used them to flee. In September most of the residents were forced to leave their apartments and move elsewhere.' In late 1965 the border troops began tearing down the buildings along Bernauer Strasse to create a border strip with a clear field of fire. The trees mark the line of the Outer Wall, facing West Berlin. The buildings on the right mark the line of the Inner Wall facing East Berlin.
