PACIFIC OCEAN (April 26, 2017) USS Makin Island (LHD 8) Commanding Officer Capt. Mark A. Melson delivers remarks during the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) observance aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). SAAPM is observed each April to identify and strengthen the roles that Sailors and Marines play in combating sexual assault. Makin Island, the flagship of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is returning from a seven-month deployment to the 3rd, 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation.
