A Black Crowned Night Heron perched in the branches of a pond apple tree in a South Florida wetland area appears a bit drowsy in the late afternoon light. This is a rather stocky bird with short yellow legs but distinctive too with gray and black coloring with long white head plumes. The reddish orange eyes have such beauty and depth in the pretty light. While the black crowned night heron is not an uncommon bird, it is not seen as often and its larger brethren such as the Great Blue Heron.
