A late Gothic travelling chest, France, circa 1500. A small rectangular chest with an arched lid of leather covered wood with iron strap fittings. The lid has a folding handle, a frontal lock with hasp, key included. The leather cover has finely tooled Gothic ornamentation. The front of the lid bears the lightly coloured inscription "IRESU" and "MARIA". The interior linen lining has been renewed.
