THE VALUE OF ATHLETICS The growth of athletics during the last ten years has been phe-nomenal. Even a casual inquiry will show, however, that the growthhas been principally among younger people, particularly among girlsand young women. Formerly athletics were indulged in almostexclusively by the strongest young men. Now the trend is to havesuitable athletics for the youth of both sexes from the time theyapproach adolescence and to encourage all people to continue topractice some appropriate forms of physical exercise until old age. Schools are interested in athletics because they are an essential partof physical, mental and social or moral education.
