Ever since we issued our first catalogue, we have spared no pains to make every word it contained truthful and exact, recognizing that our business must depend in a large degree upon the faith our customers have in its representations. We require the competitors for our prizes to make affidavit to their reports before the nearest Notary Public or Justice of the Peace, and in addition to personal correspondence with the successful competitor, frequently write to a disinterested third party for further corroboration. In scrutinizing the affidavits sent u<3 each year, we have come across five or six which we strongly suspected had been sent by unscrupulous parties, who were evidently trying to defraud other competitors by reporting false sizes and weights. For the protection of our patrons we made the most thorough investigation of these reports, and determined to criminally prosecute the first individual we detected in sending us a fictitious affidavit. On the twentieth of October, 1883, we received an affidavit from a farmer residing near Galena, State of Illinois, bearing the certificate of a Justice of the Peace for Jo Daviess County. It recited that this competitor had grown certain weights of grain and vege- tables from packets of seed bought of W. Atlee Burpee & Co. When the reports were compared, for the final awards, the statements contained in this affidavit were found to entitle the sender to prizes aggregating NINETY DOLLARS. After writing to him, and having some correspondence with parties in Galena concern- ing his general reputation, we forwarded him our check for the above amount. We published the statements made in his affidavit, together with several hundred others, in
