Interior of Hospital San Pau, Barcelona

Pau Gil i Serra a rich Catalan banker commissioned the modernist architect Domnech i Montaner to design a hospital with the then revolutionary idea of beautifying patients experiences and making their surroundings as agreeable as possible. He conceived a series of coloured Byzatine and Moorish inspired pavilions each serving a specific purpose. The first stone was laid in 1902 but sadly by 1911 funds ran out and only 8 of the 48 projected pavilions were completed.
