Coast Guard Helicopters Will Land on Water. This huge "doughnut" is one unit of the Coast Guard's newly developed Emergency Floatation Gear for helicopters. Tanks of compressed gas for inflating the float, which surrounds one of the regular landing wheels can be seen inside the plane through the open panel. With those new floats the Coast Guard will make helicopter operations safer, and will speed up rescues where it is desirable for the helicopter to land on water or soft ground.
