Amytal, Prescription for Severe Sleep Disorders

Amytal (sodium-amobarbital sodium), 200 mg capsules, shown with a ruler for scale. Amytal is a type of barbiturate used in the treatment of severe sleeping disorders. Amobarbital sodium is the active ingredient in sodium Amytal capsules. When used properly, Amytal causes drowsiness in order to induce sleep. The medication works by enhancing the action of a neurotransmitter called GABA in the brain. A depressant is a drug that depresses the function or activity of a specific part of the brain. Depressants are also occasionally referred to as "downers." Depressants are widely used throughout the world as prescription medicines and as illicit substances. Effects include anxiolysis, pain relief, sedation or somnolence, cognitive/memory impairment, as well as in some instances euphoria, dissociation, muscle relaxation, lowered blood pressure or heart rate, respiratory depression, and anticonvulsant effects; complete anesthesia or death at can result at high doses.
