The further fact that season andclimate exert such an influence on the plant as tomake a variety in one place very different fromwhat it is in another place, renders it difficult togive positive advice as to the choice of kinds forspecific purposes. The varieties range from abush a foot or so high, without runners, to thosehaving distinct vining or trailing habits, the vinessometimes reaching a length of ten to twentyfeet. The pods range from four to eighteeninches in length, giving seed of every possible. Fig. 51. The cowpea. 256 FORAGE CHOPS shape and form. The period of mature growthalso varies, the varieties ranging in time ofmaturity from two to six months, although thehabit of plant bears some relation to the period, for the more nearly the plant approaches the bushform, the shorter the time required for maturity. In order to choose the proper variety, the objectof its cultivation should be clearly short, quick growth and maturity are re-quired, then the bush varieties should be chosen, particularly in the North; whereas, if the purposeis to produce much forage and the period of growthcan be extended, the vining varieties are likely tobe more useful. When grown primarily for greenforage, the period in which they must grow shoulddetermine the variety. It is more difficult to choosevarieties for the North than for the South, as theplant has not been so carefully studied in this sec-tion. In the more northern sections
