After this time coins were struckby the Asmonaean princes, the Idumaeankings, during the first revolt under Elea-zar, and during the second under Bar-cochebas; and besides these nationalJewish coins, foreign coins of Persian,Greek, and Roman make circulated in579 MON MON great multitude in Palestine. Of theselatter the following are mentioned in Golden Daric. The daric, dram, or drachm, Ezr. 2 :69, is a Persian gold coin equal to aboutfive dollars and fifty cents. The stater or piece of money, Matt. 17:27, a Greek or Roman silver coin (ashekel in weight), in value over fiftycents. The stater, or coined shekel, ofthe Jews is often found in the cabinetsof antiquaries at the present day. Eoman Penny, or Denarius. The penny, Matt. 22 : 19, or denarius,h, Roman silver coin equal to an Atticdrachma, or about sixteen Americancents. Shilling would be a morecorrect translation.
