Sunset. Disc of the Sun at sunset in a reddened sky. Solar radiation seen at sunset must pass through an increasing mass of air in the Earth's atmosphere which causes the Sun and horizon to dim and become reddened. The reddening effect is due to particulate matter present in the atmosphere such as dust and aerosols, which scatters blue light more strongly than red light.
