Anglo Saxon women in mantles and veils of the 9th and 10th century.

"Anglo Saxon woman in mantle (63), Anglo Saxon woman in mantle, wearing her veil in a particular manner (64), and Anglo Saxon woman in a tunic with borders of various colours and a robe with large sleeves (65)." "The tunics worn by women in the 9th, 10th and 11th centuries show little variation. One finds some however in the borders of many colours at the hem. It is probable that this ornament was fashioned in needlepoint (65)." "Fig. 64 wears her veil in a very particular manner; it is not fixed, and the ends fall on her shoulders, leaving the collar of her robe revealed along with the front of her neck." Handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
