St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics, London, England, 19th century artwork. This mental asylum was founded in 1751, the second such institution to be built in London. It moved to this purpose-built building on Old Street in 1786. The front facade shown here was 150 metres long. In 1916, the patients were moved and the building taken over by the Bank of England. The building at far left is the Anglican church of St Luke, completed in 1733 with a distinctive obelisk spire. It was closed in 1964 and later converted into a concert hall. This artwork is from a book published in New York in 1866.
