MILLING MACHINE VISE A quick operating vise for use on milling machine tablesfitted with side bars to take the clamping strain has beendeveloped by the Edlund Machinery^ Company, Inc., Cort-land, X. Y. The purpose of the side bars is to prevent thestationary jaw from being forced out of square under theaction of the clamping strain and also to prevent the break-. IVIilling Machine Vise with Side Bars age of the base w^hen undue strain is applied. The sidebars are hinged to the stationary jaw and in operating thevise they are raised to a vertical position. In raising thebars the sliding jaw is moved away from the work by acam arrangement. After placing the work the side bars arelowered, which automatically moves the sliding jaw up tothe work, the final clamping pressure being applied by tight-ening the screws. This type of vise is made in four sizesweighing from 2,3 lb. to 95 lb., with a range of jaw openingfrom 2 in. to 4]/, in. The width of the jaws varies by stepsof one inch from 4J^ in. to 7^ in. The jaws are hardenedand ground. f^ailwayNecKanical Engineer (Formerly the RAILWAY AGE GAZETTE, MECHANICAL EDITIONwith -xhich the AMERICAN ENGINEER incorforated) PUBLISHED ON THE FiSST THURSDAY OF EvE»Y MOSTH BY THE SIMMONS-BOARDMAN PUBLISHING COMPANY Edward A.
