Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Corthylio calendula) Sacramento County California USA

This Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Corthylio calendula) has found fresh sap wells drilled by a sapsucker (Sphyrapicus sp.) in an almond tree at a suburban yard in Sacramento County California USA. Sweets such as sap are prized by kinglets, who will defend the sap wells from other birds who may want a sip of sap. This bird is displaying his ruby crown, an aggressive behavior intended to warn other birds to stay away from the sap wells.
