The press is furnished complete with pump attached, ready to operate by motor drive as shown, or it may beprovided with a belt drive. It is equipped with automaticknock-out valves for maximum pressure, also with springrelief valves. The discharge from the main press cylinder,as the ram is raised, is forced into the surge tank at thetop, and any surplus liquid which flows into the surge tankoverflows to the pump reservoir. A part of the stroke of the ram is made without anypressure registering on the gage; this is taken care of by a. 200-Ton Inverted Forcing Press With Two Bases June, 1919 RAILWAY MECHANICAL ENGINEER 377 rack and pinion, so that the ram can be brought down tothe work by hand. When this is done the cylinder isfilled with water frora the surge tank which is bolted toit; the water enters the cylinder from the tank through a check valve. When the ram stops the pump delivers thewater to the main press cylinder through another connectionand the check valve closes. The ram is counterweightedand will stay in any position where it may be placed. MILLING MACHINE WITH SPECIAL ATTACHMENT THE design of the milling machine shown inthe illustration is noteworthy in respect to sev-eral features, most conspicuous of which is thesquare overarm and the handy and easily attachablevertical spindle milling attachment, a combination pro-vided to meet the demand of those who, having a cer-tain amount of vertical or face milling work, are unable tokeep a vertical milling machine continuousl
