Macrophage, fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Stacked images of a macrophage, showing the nucleus (blue), mitochondria (green) and the calcium-regulating protein STC-1 (red). STC-1 and macrophages are important in inflammatory episodes and chemotactic mechanisms. Chemotaxis is when cells direct their movements according to certain chemicals in their environment. This is critical to early and subsequent phases of development ( migration of neurons or lymphocytes) as well as in normal function. Magnification: x 900 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
