The Nativity. Early 1600s sculpture in on south porch of the Eglise Saint-Miliau in Guimiliau, Finistère, Brittany, France.
Eglise Saint-Miliau, Guimiliau, Haut-Léon, Finistère, Brittany, France: sculpted scene on church’s south porch. The south porch was built 1606 - 1617 and is decorated with sculpted scenes from the Old and New Testaments, thought to be by the Maître de Plougastel and Roland Doré, and their workshops. Two Corinthian columns of dark Kersanton stone contrast with the lighter-coloured granite of the richly carved archivolts. Of the original 16th century church, the belfry and tower are all that remain. It was only in the 17th century that the church took on its present appearance with improvements and extensions: the addition of a main porch jutting out from the south facade and of a sacristy and the widening of side aisles. Guimiliau (Gwik Miliau in Breton, Miliau’s village) got its name from Miliau, Count of Cornouaille, murdered in 551. It is in the Haut-Léon region of Finistère
