Similarly, windings may be takenout of the first bar. With one set ofleads removed there is enough space leftto bend one side of the next neck, the removal of the leads bymeans of the gouge. This can be donewithout heating the soldered joints. Where a small number of bars are tobe replaced it is not necessary to removeall the leads from the armature neck ortake the commutator from the the armature on end, commutatorup. Mark each separate piece so that itmay be put back in its old position. Afterremoving the ring nut or bolts, take outthe metal V-ring and mica V-ring. Ifthe bars are tight, tapping with a woodenor rawhide mallet will loosen them. Thenew bar must be filed to the shape andthickness of the one which it replaces toprevent the new bar or the old bars nextto it becoming loose. Clean out the space. FIG SECTION.^L VIEW OF COMMUTATOR. tor and lined with sand paper or the car is run by the other motors, this tool, held against the commutator, will smooth the rough spots. The armature should be removed fromthe car and placed in a lathe forturning the commutator, if its face isvery rough. Holes left by defective micaor pits in the side of bars can be filledwitTi commutator cement supplied bydealers. The commutator should be re-undercutbefore it is worn flush, since the groove where new bars fit and tap tbem in witha soft mallet. Detached parts of the commutator mustbe kept clean and dry. When the partsare ready for rebuilding, sand paper themica V-ring. Clean the metal V-ring andthe V in the commutator bars, and paintthe V in the bars with shellac. The shel-lac and brush must be absolutely freefrom all dirt or moisture. After puttingthe mica V-ring and the metal V-ringback in
