Shepherds Croft Tomintoul. GPL 2834-202


It was at this cottage that Percy Toplis a wanted murderer was located. Following the shooting of Taxi driver Sidney George Spiceon Truxton Down Andover on he 24th April 1920. A manhunt ensued which eventually led to Toplis being discovered at this lonely croft near Tomintoul on the 1st of June. Apoliceman and farmer attempted to arrest Toplis who promtly shot and wounded them both before fleeing once more. On the 6th June Toplis was again located near Penrith and challanged by armed police, he attempted to run shooting as he did so but this time was fatally wounded by the officers.
