Flare stars are those in which magnetic activity causes the star to brighten suddenly with brief, periodic and violent bursts of energy. They have magnetic fields which are typically a thousand times stronger than the Sun's. Flaring occurs persistently, abruptly and unpredictably, typically every few hours to several days, each one lasting minutes or hours. During a flare, the star jettisons vast quantities of subatomic particles into space at speeds approaching that of light, and the star's luminosity increases drastically.
