Embryo development. Side views of 29 day old (top), day old (middle) and 44 day old (bottom) human embryos. The heads of the embryos are all uppermost. After 29 days, arm and leg buds can be seen forming to the right of the embryo's curved vertebrae. The embryo is 5 mm in length. At 44 days, the more human-like embryo measures 13-15 mm and has paddle-like limbs with fingers and toes forming. Its eyes (black) have also become pigmented. The embryos float in amniotic sacs, attached to the mother's placenta by an umbilical cord. After eight weeks of development, an embryo is known as a foetus.
