Rock Formation At Yehliu Geopark In The Shape Of An Elephant's Trunk

Yehliu is the name of a rocky cape on the northeast coast of Taiwan. The cape is known for the interesting rock formations that were formed when ocean waves eroded part of the rocky shore. The formations, called hoodoos, can be seen in the Yeliu Geopark. Some of the rock formations have names based on objects that resemble their shapes, for example, mushroom rocks, candle rocks and as in this case, an Elephant's ears and trunk. As the Earth's crust rises in the vicinity of Taiwan, differential erosion by the sea has shaped the rocks around Yehliu into their current forms. Apart from the erosive forces of wind, sun, and rain, visitors' inappropriate behavior has also accelerated the rate of erosion.
