Official documents, comprising the department and other reports made to the Governor, Senate and House of Representatives of Pennsylvania . mills have trained chemists and experts with apparatusof the most scientific character for the purpose of analyzing the rawmaterials out of which their cement is to be made, and for the furtherpurpose of determing, after manufacture, that the cement conformsto the various specifications adopted by the various engineers andgovernment institutions. The general requisites in specifications are fineness, tensilestrength of the pure cement, and mixtures of cement and sand, andconstancy of volume. Modern specifications may be said for fineness to require that90 per cent, of the finished product shall pass through a sieve having100x100 mesh, or say a mesh sieve. The tensile strain is arrived at by the manufacture, in mouldsas per Cut Xo. 7, of briquettes having a breaking area of one squareinch, and these test pieces made of the pure (neat) cement, and inmixtures as high as one part cement to three parts sand, are requiredto give at 21 hours, 7 days and 28 days, the following results:. No. 7. Testing- Clips and Shapes of Briquettes.
