Pacific service magazine . gas-making materials. A study of the petro-leum situation made upon data from allaccessible sources establishes a belief thatthe price of oil will, within a few years, beso high as to prohibit the use of processesthat depend entirely upon oil. The eas-making method now used by this comoanvdepends entirely upon residuum from the oilrefineries. It is, therefore, quite desirablethat the gas be made of coal and, if nns-sible, from coal in California. But. thesecoals are not of the character commonlyclassed as gas coals. Thus, the solution ofthis problem involves a number of studies:An economic study ofcoals available to CentralCalifornia from allsources; examination ofthese coals as to theiradaptability to presentknown gas-making pro-cesses; possibilities ofadapting or modifyingpresent gas-making meth-ods to the use of localcoals ; development, ifnecessary, of a process forutilizing local coals. Two of these studiesExterior of experimental gas manufacturing plant. have been completed and. Pacific Service Magazine 251 a plan of procedure has been adopted, butthe final solution will depend upon the de-velopments as the experiments proceed. Of the gas-making coals available to Cen-tral California there are three sources thatfall within the class of economic possibility, namely, Utah, Australia and of these are from without the of the coals in California would begood for gas-making were it not for theirhigh sulphur content, while all of the localcoals having a low percentage of sulphurare poor in gas-making qualities accordingto the ordinary methods of is, however, a deposit of sub-bitumi-nous coal in the northern part of the Statewhich is low in sulphur and is accessible toour territory. The logical procedure is toat?tempt to adapt some of the present manu-facturing processes to this material. The process of gas manufacture chosenfor this purpose is that of carburettedwater-gas with the back run featur
