Altamira bison cave painting, 1916 artwork. These cave paintings were made between 34,000 and 14,000 years ago in the periods corresponding to Aurignacian to Magdalenian palaeolithic art. This painting is of a wild European bison, and is from the Altamira cave, Spain. The caves are mostly closed to visitors today to conserve the delicate colours of the ancient originals. Artwork by Henri Breuil, from 'Un essai de reconstitution plastique des races humaines primitives' (Rutot, 1916).
