Whatis diffolvd and melted, being the heavieft, willdefcend as low as it can, arid cover and inclofe theKernel of the Earth round about, as a molten Seaor Abyfs ; according as it is explained and fctclown in the precedent Book. But what is morelight and volatile, will float in the Air; as Fumes,Smoke, Exhalations, Vapours of Water, and what-soever terreftrial Parts can be elevated and fup-ported by the Strength of Fire. Thefe, all mingledtogether, of different Sizes, figures, and Motions, will conftitute an opake Cloud, or thick Regionof Darknefs round the Earth ; ib as the Globe ofthe Earth, with its Atmofphere; after the Confla-gration is finimed, will ftand much-what in theForm reprefented in this Scheme. Now as to the lower of thefe two Regions, the Region of melted Matter, A. A. we iliallhave little Occafion to take Notice of it ; feeingit will contribute nothing to the Formation ofthe new World. But the upper Region, or all above /*>/. 2 f/. lO% Jiaok. 4. Concerning the Nczv Heavens, &c. 193 above that Orb of Fire, is the true Draught of aChaos; or a Mixture and Confufion of all theElements, without Order or Diftinclion. Hereare Particles of Earth, and of Air, and of Wa±ter, all promifcuouily jumbled together, by theForce and Agitation of the Fire. But when thatForce ceafes, and every one is left to its own In-clination, they will, according to their differentdegrees of Gravity, feparate and fort themfelvesafter this manner : Firft, the heavieft and grofTeftParts of the Earrh will fubfide, then the wateryParts will follow; then a lighter fort Of Earth, which will flop, and reft upon the Surface of theWater, and compofe there a thin Film or Mem-brane.
