It is the male that wears the black collar, and this malemakes a pretty good sort of a husband. He will bring up his 104 OUR BIRD FRIENDS family in case a boy kills the mother bird and he will fight any-thing that tries to break up his nest. Out in the country where there is not so much soot and dirt,the English sparrow is not so dull colored as in the city.
