Moreno,however, states that these animals have been seen in the hills inthe vicinity of Port Desire, on the Atlantic Coast : I do not thinkthat they are any longer to be found there. As far as my personalobservations go, I never came across a specimen farther east than THE LARGER MAMMALS OF PATAGONIA 249 a couple of miles from the shore of Lake Buenos Aires upon itsnorth-eastern side. At this season I never sawa large herd, but in the winter Mr. Cattle, a pioneer li\inL;- nearLake Aroentino, informed me that he had seen a larw herd otover a hundred strong- that visited the lake. In the warmerweather 1 noticed them usually in small parties of two or three,seldom more. These animals are in the habit of wandering outside the forestsin the evening- and forenoon, but in the afternoon thev generallvretire to their shelter, where they often lie down. I have foundthem inhabiting the margins of the dense forests ui)on the slopesof the Cordillera which border the lakes.
