Malignant melanoma of the alveolar ridge, light micrograph. The alveolar ridge is the raised part of the upper and lower jaw bones behind the teeth. Malignant (cancerous) melanoma (central brown pigmented area) of the oral mucosa is a rare tumour. The prognosis is poor, with a 5-year survival rate generally in the range of 10-25 per cent. Magnification: x 100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
