Founded in 1718, the Cathedral of the Epiphany became the first cathedral in Irkutsk built outside the walls of the prison, and is today the second oldest surviving stone building in Irkutsk after the Church of the Savior. The construction of the cathedral was carried out on donations from citizens and was finally completed only in 1746, although services were held here since 1723 in the Peter and Paul chapel. Until the consecration of the Kazan Cathedral in 1894, the Epiphany Cathedral remained the main cathedral of the Irkutsk diocese. By the end of the XVIII century, the temple was surrounded by a stone fence, several more chapels were added to it. In 1815, the construction of the second bell tower was completed, on which a "Big Bell" weighing just under 30 tons was hoisted on March 30, 1815. In the second half of the XIX century, a bishop's compound was built at the Epiphany Cathedral. During the XVIII-XIX centuries, the cathedral suffered from earthquakes more than once, as a result of which its appearance changed somewhat after the rebuilding. The famous Irkutsk fire of 1879 did not damage the cathedral.
