This feeling of solidarity was stillfurther strengthened by the refusal of President Merrifield to accept the offerof the presidency of the University of Montana in the spring of 1895. Duringthese two years the faculty and students of the university and the citizens ofthe state drew closer together than ever before in their mutual efifort to maintainthis important state institution unimpaired through the most serious crisis in itshistory. The need of a permanent source of revenue having thus been shown,the friends of the university devised a plan of a mill tax which was enacted intolaw at a later session of the Legislature.
