View N of All Souls redundant Anglican church, Haley Hill, Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, UK, & Dean Clough Mills. Church built 1856-59 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, funded by local industrialist Col. Edward Akroyd as the centrepiece of the model village of Akroydon built for his millworkers. The large Gothic Revival church has a tower & spire 72m high. Declared redundant in the late 1970s, since 1989 it has been in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust; it is a Grade I Listed Building. Dean Clough Mills were built between 1841-69 for the Congregationalist Crossley family who, like Akroyd, were also interested in providing model housing for their workers. Crossley Carpets became one of the world's largest carpet factories, stretching for half a mile & comprising 16 Grade II Listed Victorian mills. When the factory closed in 1983 it was bought by a consortium led by Sir Ernest Hall which has conserved & developed the site. Considered to be an outstanding example of urban regeneration, the converted mills contain around 150 businesses & arts venues.
