DNA sequencing. Male technician using a pipettor above an electrophoresis gel during DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) sequencing. In genetic sequencing the DNA is broken into short fragments by an enzyme, dyed and placed on an electrophoresis gel (agarose gel). Electrophoresis is then carried out (seen at centre left) by setting up an electric field over the gel. In the electric field the DNA fragments migrate at different rates and separate. This technique creates bands showing the coding sequence of DNA and allows the genetic code of the DNA to be analysed.
