The accompanying illustration shows that there are other big business affairs in Hollywood besides the moving pic- ture industry. For many years the late A. Ecke, father of Paul Ecke, had grown poinsettias for the market and had constantly added to his acreage. The present owner has also kept going ahead, until now some fifteen acres are devoted to their culture. Mr. Ecke's cut flower business starts in November, keeps on all through the winter and spring and when it lets up he is ready to go on with stock plants. In all, some 250,000 plants are grown, and all in the field shown in the illustration will prob- ably be lifted for stock plant purposes. These are shipped during the season to every state in the union, as well as to Canada and the West Indies. Cut flowers are shipped with success to middle west points and practically all over the western country and the south. There are several varieties grown, each having its own individual character- istics, but the two most in demand are the early and late reds, the latter an im- mense, well colored variety, the former good, but slightly smaller. A true pink, too, is pretty and of distinct character, so much so that a good demand is springing up for it. There is also a white and a double form, but the large, deep red Christmas variety still has the greatest call. The present season has been extremely satisfactory, no high winds or heavy rains having occurred to damage flowers and foliage, and so there is every prospect of an exception- ally good season. Mr. Ecke says that the demand is already good and in- creasing daily. H. B. E. BROWN BBOS. &; CO. CBLEBBATE. Founder's Oolden Wedding.
