Sir James Graham, introduced the failed Irish Coercion bill of 1846

Illustration by Émile Desmaisons (1812-1880) from The Life and Times of Queen Victoria published circa 1901. Graham introduced the Preservation of Life Bill (Irish Coercion) which was defeated in the Commons leading to the resignation of Robert Peel and the fall of the government. As a result, the Conservative Party divided and the Whigs formed a government with Russell as Prime Minister. Those Conservatives who were loyal to Peel became known as the Peelites, they included Graham, the Earl of Aberdeen and William Ewart Gladstone.
