Ischaemic toes on the foot of a 72 year old woman. Ischaemia is a lack of blood supply to an area of the body, caused by a narrowing of the blood vessels that supply it. It can lead to tissue death (gangrene) and infection. Causes include vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes or injury. Treatment is of the underlying cause and with vasodilator drugs to open up the blood vessels.
