The work cannot be put later than the very beginning of thesixteenth century; that is, before the year 1520. Mirrors of so large a sizeas this were always of metal in the middle ages: although glass undoubt-edly was used as far back as the fourteenth century for the small roundhand mirrors. The present example was purchased with the Soulagescollection. The mirror stands upon a square base with canted angles, shaped likethe stem of a chalice or drinking cup. The four large sides rise to withinthree inches of the frame, gradually diminishing so as to contain fourslightly
