The grass is green and nutritious, and the japonica blooms throughout the winter; so that the winters and summers of Jersey are not in violent contrast, and all its seasons are mild and uniform. So far the influence of climate on the type of cattle. The agriculture of Jersey is gardening rather than farming, so thrifty and industrious are the people. The farms are usually very small—say twenty acres or less on the average ; the cultivated crops are to a great extent raised by spade-hus- bandry and hand cultivation, and the abundant seaweed provides a cheap anil viiluable manure; tiie fields are very small, and their pr<iductive ca])acit3' is raised to a high position.
