Usedom island. Aerial view over the coast of Usedom, Germany, with the village of Peenemunde at the end of the coast. In the foreground is the city of Zinnowitz where the German rocket engineer Wernher von Braun 91912-1977) lived. Behind are Trassenheide and Karlshagen. Usedom is in the Baltic Sea on the border between Germany and Poland. In 1938 the German military opened the Peenemunde Airfield and the Peenemunde Army Research Centre, which was the Luftwaffe test site. This photograph was taken circa 1938 from an altitude of around 400 metres.
