Mars. Composite satellite image of the surface of Mars, showing the south polar cap (white), which consists mainly of frozen carbon dioxide and extends to the 80 degree latitude circle. Mars' equatorial band and southern hemisphere are characterised by heavily cratered areas that are in contrast with the sparsely cratered plains (upper left) of the northern hemisphere. Seen just right of centre is the Argyre Planitia, a vast impact crater about 1800 kilometres in diameter, surrounded by mountains. This image was created using data from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft's Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter.
