View of the Gangdise or Kailas Transhimalaya mountains from Lake Manasarovar, Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibetan Autonomous Region
Lake Manasarovar lies at 4,590m above sea level and is fed by the Kailash Glaciers. Like Mount Kailash, the lake is revered as a sacred place in four religions: Bön, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism and attracts pilgrims from India, Nepal, Tibet and the rest of the world. Bathing in Manasarovar and drinking its water is believed by Hindus to cleanse all sins.
