When sown early inspring it should be ready for feeding late in June. Common Vetch is generally sown at the rate ofsixty to ninety pounds per acre, with about fiftypounds of oats, wheat, rye or barley to support thevines. Winter, Sand or HairyVetch is another annuallegume, similar to Com-mon Vetch and valuablefor the same purposes,but it is suitable for cli-mates where the wintersare more severe and thesummers are hotter anddrier. It is the varietyused east of the Cas-cades, generally for fallsowing, but it may alsobe sown in spring. It makes splendid hay,ensilage, pasture, greenfeed, and is of specialvalue as a fertilizer. It is used as a covercrop for orchards, pre-vents washing of the soilduring the winter, andwhen plowed under inspring makes one of thevery best fertilizers, fur-nishing nitrogen and hu-mus, both of which areneeded by the soils inthat section. Nitrogenis the most expensive fertilizing element, and isthe element most lacking. The seed of Hairy Vetch is smaller than CommonVetch, and thirty pounds is sufficient to sow anacre.
